Glossary of Terms

lock has spring latch bolt operated by lever or knob plus deadbolt operated by key
latch like a lock but only has spring latchbolt
deadlock like a lock but no latch. Just key operated deadbolt.
cylinder key operated barrel which is inserted into and held within the lockcase.
single cylinder key operation from one side only. Suitable for storerooms, risers.
double cylinder key operation from both sides.
cylinder & thumbturn key operation from one side, simple turn knob from other side.
door closer device which shuts door hydraulically. Can be concealed or surface mounted. Concealed door closers will suit double swing doors but surface door closers will only swing one way.
backcheck a damping action which increases the amount of oil in the chamber as the door opens to 90 deg and acts as a kind of cushion to prevent the door being flung open beyond its max opening angle.
delay an adjustment in the door closer which allows the door to hold open for up to 60 seconds.
lever handle device for operating a latch or a lock. Supplied in pairs. Try to avoid one side operation. If you specify 1 set of lever handles you will get 2 handles + 1 spindle. Sufficient for 1 door.
rose the circular or oval component upon which the lever or knob bears. Supplied in sets.
escutcheon the circular/oval component which goes underneath the rose and surrounds the cylinder barrel. Supplied in singles.
backplate a long plate combining holes for lever handle & cylinder barrel. Supplied in sets.
